The Head of Design and Build plans, organises, directs, controls and coordinates the construction of all building projects, and the financial, physical and human resources involved. Supervises works to ensure that the technical work conforms to the project requirements especially in terms of quality, cost and schedule.

Reports To: Head of Company
Supervises: Head Construction and Senior Architect

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 
1. Strategic Management
  • Provide leadership, coaching and direction to the various design and build units. In collaboration with the finance business partner, develop an annual budget prepared in line with the firm’s strategic plan. Provide periodic financial reports on expenditure, to be reviewed by the Business Head.
  • Oversee the finances of the department; ensure the smooth flow of the requisition and retirement process.
  • Prepare estimates and documents required to obtain permits, approvals for bids, sales etc.
  • Participate in the recruitment of specialists and the selection of vendors and subcontractors.

2. Project Management

  • Responsible for all design and build projects, ensuring consistency in quality and standards, timely delivery and proper management of costs.
  • Set and agree on project objectives with the design and build teams; prepare, check and approve deliverables.
  • Serve as a key link with the internal or external clients and review the deliverables prepared by the team before commencing any project.
  • Prepare project schedules and monitor the project construction schedule on a weekly basis.
  • Analyse and implement the most suitable project management system, using the appropriate technology to monitor and track progress of the project at all times
  • Carry out risk assessment in collaboration with the relevant officers.
  • Maintain strict adherence to the budgetary guidelines, quality and safety standards.
  • Conduct periodic inspection of construction sites and ensure project documents are complete.
  • Secure and schedule internal and external resources required to deliver project activities.
  • Perform other project engineering and project management related duties.

3. Stakeholder Management

  • Network and maintain relationship with the relevant Government Agencies- Urban and Regional Planning, Infrastructural Development etc.
  • Build and manage relationships with other relevant stakeholders including community leaders, land owners etc, to ensure best outcome for the business.
  • Promote a harmonious relationship between the architects, engineers and contractors to ensure the best outcome of the projects

4. Commercial Support

  • Prepare requisitions and technical evaluation of bids for discipline material and equipment procurement; ensure equipment vendors provide timely and quality input into design and build packages.

EDUCATIONAL/PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Engineering, Architecture, Urban & Regional Planning or related discipline.
  • Project management professional certification
  • Experience
  • Minimum of 10 years experience including project engineering, management experience or equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Experience in Urban & Regional Planning or Construction industry.
